Vitreo-Retinal Services
The retina of the eye can be compared to film in a camera. Its function is to transmit images to the brain via the optic nerve. This delicate inner lining of the back of the eye is composed of many layers of rods, cones, various types of cells and all interconnecting nerve fibers. Disturbances or breakdowns in this intricate component of the eye can lead to visual problems or loss.
Many retinal conditions are affected by the vitreous, or jelly-like material, which fills the rear two-thirds of the interior of the eyeball. Located between the lens of eye and the retina, this transparent, colorless mass is solid like gelatin in childhood and begins to liquefy as we age.

Flashes & Floaters
Eye floaters are a common eye symptom that occurs as the eyes age. If you have ever seen "bugs", specks, faint strings, or flashes of light in your field of vision, you have experienced flashes and floaters. Generally, these phenomena are harmless and are the result of microscopic particles casting tiny shadows on the retina.
Detecting Tears & Detachments
Occasionally, floaters signal a more serious eye problem. A sudden onset of floaters that appear as a cloud of dark spots or spider web, especially when accompanied by flashes of light, may signal a torn or detached retina. A black "curtain" over your vision is a sign of a detached retina. It is important to see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment of retinal tears can prevent vision loss.
